PVL Whey Maxx
69What is whey protein? Here's the scoop on the most common protein supplement used by athletes, fitness pros and bodybuilders. PVL's Whey Maxx protein supplement is featured here.
Why Protein?
The average adult individual requires 0.8g protein/kg body weight per day. That means if you weigh 68kg (150lbs), you would need at least 54g of protein/day. With the need to increase muscle mass and size, athletes and bodybuilders may consume up to 1.5g protein/kg body weight per day.
Although protein can be found in some of the daily foods we eat such as eggs, chicken, milk, and other meats and dairy products, we often do not eat the daily recommended requirement. As a result, many turn to the easy to make and consume protein supplements.
Whey Protein
The most commonly used protein supplement, whey protein is derived from milk during the process in which milk turns to cheese. It contains the essential amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. There are 2 types of whey protein: concentrate and isolate. Concentrate whey is made up of 30-85% protein. The more common whey protein consumed, you will find that this type is often easier to find and cheaper to purchase when you walk into any health food store. Isolate whey protein, on the other hand, is made up of more than 90% protein, more easily absorbed and contains less fat and lactose. It is often harder to find this type and therefore, more expensive to purchase.
Whey protein is not recommended for those who have a milk allergy or is lactose intolerant. It is recommended that you do not consume more than 25g of protein at a time to minimize liver overload.
